FSOpen and changing IP numbers

Hello Dave,
Is there any chance that a future version of FSOpen can be written that will counter the problem of changing IP numbers?

My internet provider, otherwise a fast, stable, and reliable service, gives me a dynamic IP, not a static one. This in itself is not a problem until some 'event' occurs that provokes a change of IP number. Should this occur, FSOpen continues to report the previous IP and does not update with the new one. The only way I can resolve this is to shut down FSOpen and restart it. In the meantime anyone attempting to connect to my server will be unable to and anyone already in will lose connection.

I am unsure of the ratio of static to dynamic IP's but I am sure that I cannot be the only one who gets this problem. I guess I could change internet provider or pay for a static address but because I already have a good connection, bar this one problem which centres on FSOpen, I am understandably reluctant to do so.

Is there anyone else out there that has the same issue?

Dave,

We've had this happen to us before. Would it be possible to "refresh" the IP address every 10 minutes or so?

It is possible but if your ip changes it will disconnect every player regardless of any changes in fsopen.

I will add it to the next release.

Hello Dave,
That sounds like great news, thank you!

Yes, I am aware that should the IP number change any players in session will be disconnected but if they were able to get back in after a few minutes they may not be left 'high and dry' as such. An IP number refresh every few minutes would at least prevent the server from 'disappearing' for hours at a time if there were an IP number change.

Off topic, in the last month or so I've been contacted by a few players who disappeared after December 2012 when Gamespy died. They have rediscovered FSX as a result of FSOpen! Keep up the good work.

Derek,

I've written a small program to help out with this.

It basically monitors for an IP change or hiccup. Here are the program features when an IP event occurs:
1. it closes the fsopen server2
2. waits until your internet connection is established
3. runs fsopen and signs in for you
4. keeps a logs of all internet changes
5. runs silent in the background
6. runs fsopen server program when your server boots up.

Will email you a link for the installer and will make it available for others soon for free of course. Anyone that's interested can email support@realfsx.org for more information.

If you IP does indeed change... the important thing to remember guys.. is regardless of what FSOpen does... you will STILL have to give the new IP Address to your users. This needs to be entered into their FSX... before they can connect to your server.

If you utilize TeamSpeak for coms with your players... you can quickly advise them of the IP change.

Otherwise, the only solution.. is a Static IP (small monthly cost) which will totally eliminate the issue.

Hello David,
That sounds amazing, I look forward to hearing from you. Assuming that it closes FSOpen and then restarts it automatically that should at least mean that the server software is 'broadcasting' the correct address if there has been an IP change - nice!

Curley,

When your IP address changes fsopen server2 will advertise your old IP number until it is restarted. The software monitors for an IP change or internet hiccup then restarts the fsopen server2 software automatically so everyone will see the correct IP address instead of the old IP on the fsopen server list page.

There is a risk here, you are trusting a 3rd party not to capture your userid and password for fsopen.

I will work on a proper fix today.

Version 1.04 will now change the ip address on fsopen.co.uk, however, it's much better to have a server that has a static ip then to rely on this feature.

Dave,

A static ip option isn't available for all people. Glad you took time to help them out!

Best regards
