I was flying vatsim and when I passed FL 240 I got contacted and screwed up my whole flight.

My route was:
LAM L10 BPK N601 MARGO

The controller told me that he editted my FP to
LAM UL10 BPK UN601 MARGO

So I totally lost it there cause he was also unclear xD

So what does that U matter?
is it a whole different route?
what to do?

Thanks

Hi Steff,

To be honest the delivery controller at Gatwick should have picked this up rather than leaving it to enroute controller to ensure that no confusion would be caused during flight!! Know who the ATC was?

Both flight plans are valid and are useable.

The top one is for anywhere up to FL245.
The second is for FL245 to FL660.

The 'U' does matter, 'U' for 'Upper', and this is something I'll have to correct at least once or twice everytime I control so don't worry too much about it! :p

UL10 sits directly on top of L10(as with every upper airway), so to answer your question, NO it does not actually change your routing. I imagine taking an upper airway means 'the corridor' gets bigger or wider when your higher- though I'm sure some lovely C1 or Mick can tell you about that?? (HINT! ;)) I just sit and complain at people 'til they change it on vatsim- i don't ask why i need too :p

SO WHAT TO DO? The general key is for FL250+ put a 'U' before your airways! even if you make no changes in your FMC; the flight plan must be correct before departure(Though this does seem to have slipped through the net!!).

Simple??

Also, noticed you said the controller editted you plan!?!?!

Did he ask you to confirm that you wish to use upper airways before doing this? This is another thing that vatsim controllers should do to educate pilots on incorrect route planning! (Bloody London Control!! Rebels! :p) iF you turned around and said 'WHAT!?' Then he would know he needed to tell you why your routing was incorrect in relation to your filed cruise level.

The controller told me that i can fly this route on only FL180 or below.
So he said he changed my FP to the U airways on a very "unclear" way.

Hmmm.

Just checked this in the Standard Routing Document (This is the bible for all flight plans!)

It clearly states that route

LAM L10 BPK N601 MARGO

from Gatwick to Edinburgh using lower airways has a maximum level of 245, any higher and you'd need to switch to upper airways as in your second example.

It also tells me you would have recieved a Tweed1A for arrival.
I'm not too sure why London Control would enforce this restriction unless theyve made a mistake. So thats what I will be presume!

NATS SRD should help you to file a correct and realistic flight plan in the UK- take a look for yourself and see its MAX is FL245 ;)

Off topic, tell me next time your off to Edinburgh!!! ;)

Speak to you soon!!

Hi Steff, I don't know how it works in VATSIM but in the "UK real world" (and in FSo), upper air routes start at FL250. They often sit above airways and, where this is the case, they share the same airway designator with the prefix "U". However, there are many upper air routes that do NOT have an associated airway underneath them. The "corridor" is no bigger or smaller than when routing along an airway - ie 5nm either side of the centreline (anything outside that is considered "off route").

I think your VATSIM controller was being a bit over zealous and I don't know where he got FL180 from (?) - FL180 isn't the dividing line for anything in UK airspace.

Now you wouldn't get that from any FSo controller......or would you?.....

The final answer seems to be, THAT LONDON CONTROL THOUGHT YOU WERE GOING TO MANCHESTER!! L-O-L
