Adam Burke 30th Jan 2011 14:36:21 | Yesterday I went for a lesson in a cessna 172 at newtonards airfield which is a typical ww2 airfield ( "A" shape runway layout). Although I have some training on a similair aircraft with cadets but I was amazed at how much I knew from the sim and could put into practice during the flight l. Also I noticed how relaxed VFR airfields actually are compared to FSopen. A lot of the time people only request a basic service and atc don't even comunicate with pilots that often and this is a really busy airspace beside two international airports. |

Mick McG ![]() 30th Jan 2011 17:14:31 | Hi Adam, it's great to hear that the sim environment and FSo is useful when you go flying for real. I love VFR flight just because of the freedom you refer to. Providing you remain outside Controlled Airspace you can go pretty much wherever you like and not speak to a soul.
Newtownards itself doesn't have ATC as such as it's an "Air/Ground" station (Newtownards Radio) so the only service the operator is allowed to provide is a Basic Service. But having said that, even if ATC at Belfast City or Aldergrove approach were providing the service, on a nice day Basic Service is ideal for everyone - the pilot is responsible for the safety of his flight, not the controller, so ATC can sit with their feet up watching Sky Sports Xtra smoking bit fat cigars if they want to. It's only when an aircatft requests or requires a radar and/or procedural service that the stogie's get stubbed out and the telly switched off. That's where many FSX ATC's go wrong as they're often under the impression that ALL flights everywhere are controlled by ATC and in the real world that's simply not the case. In a server I used to frequent, I've been given an avoiding action turn on traffic 25000ft above me and the controller concerned insisted I took the turn or be booted! Needless to say I didn't hang around on that server. That's why, through our ATCO trg scheme, we're attempting to educate all our FSopen ATCO's to control in a way that is more realistic and equally as enjoyable although, I have to say, it's seems easier in the real world because the pilots (generally) know the rules - in FSX generally they dont! At Newtownards, the pilots that fly from there will know where the EGAC and EGAA CTZ/CTA boundaries are and will steer clear of them - you get bet your life that the relaxed ATC attitude would change quickly if ”Cessna GOLF TWINKY TWANKY” wandered into the zone without a clearance and balked one of the IFR inbounds or stopped their departures! You needn’t worry about that though buddy; keep us up to date with your progress on the flying lessons and don't keep those tips from your instructor a secret - I want to know what the correct rpm and manifold pressure that I should be aiming for on the downwind leg is. Clear skies mate, M |

Where'd you get that example..Mick!? Being a controller and all... Doesn't work for you on finals though does it ! :p |
Mick McG ![]() 30th Jan 2011 17:24:06 | I've noticed the cigar smoke gets in my eyes A LOT on finals lol :)

...agreed! Basic services make ATCOs lifes easier and the pilots too! |
| Stephen Dubbie 30th Jan 2011 17:59:41 | The only thing that makes it easyer is Flight Following :) |
Mick McG ![]() 30th Jan 2011 18:33:12 | Fact of the day: "Flight Following" is a bona fide ATC service in the United States.
As I understand it, it's basically a cross between a Basic Service and Traffic Service with the odd deconfliction advice thrown in if the controller happens to be paying attention at the time (it's not mandatory). Also while I'm on, I should perhaps emphasise that Smoking can Kill and Sky Sports Xtra is not compulsory ATC viewing (except on Saturday pm). :) |
Joe Lewis ![]() 30th Jan 2011 18:48:41 | You didn't tell your passengers that when you landed in auckland! |
Adam Burke 30th Jan 2011 20:21:20 | Thanks for the responses guys. Yeah Mike there seems to be quite a funny tradition at ards where the tower radios bananas to you when your on finals :) and the cigars comment reminds me of the tower flypast in top gun lol
