I have read several posts about the new system but I remain unsure how to improve my rating again.

Hey. Just ask either, Kieran Hardern, Mick McG, Christian Smith or James Nugent when they are available in teamspeak to test you.

This way sound like a stupid question but when issuing pushback instructions, for example to the west is that just the aircrafts left or is it true west?

Hi Adam,

It's great to read that you're interested in improving your ATC grade. Joe's right, just catch one of the above mentioned in TS to arrange a good time to watch you "in action". There's no test as such, in that it's not an exam or anything, it's more of an evaluation really. To get your second stripe we'd be looking at how well you deal with the following objectives:
* Record complete ATIS
* Gives competant Pushback and Taxi Instructions
* Issue IFR clearances (SID and non-standard departures)
* Pass pre-flight information to VFR traffic
* Manage simultaneous ground movements

You'll notice that this first step is based on being able to deal effectively with Ground control before moving onto Aerodrome. That's the idea at least; we're looking to improve our ATC standards by making sure everyone who goes through the "system" is able to meet the same basic requirements for each control position. Like you, pretty much everyone starts off in Ground, then they'll do Tower and finally Radar.

As the training system matures, we'll have some study material in the form of top tips and phraseology guides that will be accessible from the website for everyone to have a look at and have some idea of how good we think it's going to be. The trouble is, Rome wasn't built in a day and it takes a little while to prepare the sort of things we're talking about. So I guess the message is, bear with us - it'll take a little time but it'll be worth it and the quality of our controlling will improve much faster as a result.

Look forward to catching you in TS.

Yeah, I think this system will be much better and more professional, therefore creating a better flying experience. But while i was looking through the manuals i cant find anything on handling VFR traffic which is my downside.

Hi again Adam

I think our post overlapped. Above you ask, "This may sound like a stupid question but when issuing pushback instructions, for example to the west is that just the aircrafts left or is it true west"?

First of all, there's no such thing as a "stupid question" - if you don't know, you can guarantee plenty of others don't either, it's just that you've got the bottle to ask!

To answer your question, think of it the other way round. The controller might not know exactly which way an ac is facing when it's parked, so he wouldn't necessarily know which way is the pilots left. However, both the pilot and controller know which way West is. So, when the controller says "...pushback approved, face west on ..." , it's up to the pilot to make sure his ac faces West after the pushback manoeuvre no matter which way he has to turn in order to achieve that.

Hope this helps. M

Doh! Sorry Adam - I'm so slow at typing our posts keep crossing. Don't worry about VFR stuff - it's straight forward and easy to pick up. We'll cover it in the ATC Trg nights on a regular basis anyway. You'll have that next stripe in no time!
