Adam Burke 28th Mar 2011 19:01:25 | Hello,
I have recently applied to become an engineer officer in the RAF. I have the initial filter interview next week and I was just wondering if anyone has experience or advice on passing the interview?, perhaps a few examples of questions Regards Adam |
Mick McG ![]() 28th Mar 2011 19:32:36 | Hi Adam,
Are you doing te interview at your local AFCO or at Cranwell? Either way, don't worry about the questions - just be yourself. Usual interview rules apply; turn up 10 minutes before they say to turn up to give you time to gather your thoughts but not long enough to start bricking it! Dress so you feel and look smart - you only get one chance to make a first impression and all that. In the interview, give your main attention to the person who asks you the question - look them straight in the eye, not above their head or at your knees. Be confident but not cocky. If you get asked a question and you don't know the answer, just say so - DO NOT WAFFLE. They'll be looking for evidence of your leadership abilities, so have a think about what activities you do where you take a leading role or take responsibilty. Team events, organising people - all these things are useful ammo for your interview. They'll ask you about any knowledge you have of the RAF. What aircraft are in the fleet, where are they deployed, what are the main bases in the UK and abroad. What do you think of the cuts to MOD spending - how would you save money? How will you contribute to the RAF ethos if you get in? What is the RAF ethos? Hope this helps mate. Good luck M |
Dave Wave ![]() 28th Mar 2011 21:20:16 | I found they will delve into your answers...
eg. as Mick says, if you are asked what airbases are abroad, and you say x, y, z they might ask why do we have an airbase in y? I suggest you get to grips with the UK roles in Afghanistan, Iraq and obviously Libya. Why we are there, under whoose command etc. Of course I didn't get in and Mick did :-) |
Mick McG ![]() 28th Mar 2011 23:26:46 | If they ask you Daves' questions and you can answer them - you're in!! lol
It's worth bearing in mind, they'll be making sweeping judgements on you based on your confidence, appearance and general demeanour during the interview. They're experts at what they do but essentially what their trying to decide is whether you will fit in to their military "club". Are you intelligent and engaging enough to hold your own in a convesation in the bar with these fellows? - Dave was too intelligent for them and it took me best part of 25yrs to work my way round from serving them thier drinks! Enjoy the process though Adam and take on board any advice they give you. One last thing! FIRM HAND SHAKE (not a bone-crusher but firm! Definately NOT a limp fish handshake) AND look them in the eye while you do it. Let us know how it goes buddy. Again, best of luck. Rgds M |

Pete Gummerson 29th Mar 2011 20:57:52 | Hey Adam i'd sujest wearing a suit for the interview not like a fancy dance suit but an office suit maybe.
I had an interview for the Royal Navy a few weeks ago and the people applying to get an officer position like myself wore suits. I didn't get offered a place as an officer but I have been to some Merchant Navy positions and i wore a suit for them and i've been offered a place with a company and as luck would have it they work round the caribbean =D So good luck with your interview =D |
